These days it’s seems as though living a cleaner and healthy lifestyle is becoming more and more a part of our social dialogue. We’re inundated with organic this, keto that and I am all for it. For too long have we, as an American society, accepted cheap artificial and processed ingredients as normal and forgone physical activity and traded it in for longer hours at a desk. However, I’m excited for this new trend where we’re beginning to ask ourselves important questions that eventually influence how and where we shop.
- Where is this sourced?
- What’s in it?
- Is it local? Is it sustainable?
- How is it packaged? Shipped? Recycled?
These questions, and actively asking them about the products we use, gives back our power and influence as consumers.
But where many have made strides to live a healtheir lifestyle in terms of eating well, dressing ethically, and joining that yoga or cycling class, there’s one habit many of us have yet to kick.
How we care for our skin.
The easiest ways to care for our skin.
Drink more water and less alcohol
I know I tell myself to drink plenty of water, but it’s no secret this is a goal I’ll have for the rest of my life. It’s also no secret I love me some wine and a vodka soda. Drinking alcohol is simply just part of my lifestyle and not something I plan on giving up. However, I am more mindful of its affects on my skin and take measures to limit my glasses and up my skincare game.
Speaking of skincare…
Oh, if younger Kelly knew the importance of properily moisturizing! I wish I could shake myself and drop a few truth bombs on how something as simple as moisturizing will work wonders for my skin! Since using the Cleansing Balm I’ve seen a distinct difference like a more even skin tone, less breakouts, and softer skin.
What I love most about this Cleansing Balm is how versatile it is! I can use it as a daily cleanser, to wipe away dirt and makeup, or as an overnight moisturizing mask. I love getting out of a hot shower or bath and alternating between using a moisturizing lotion or this balm to nourish my skin. In the few weeks I’ve begun using it regularly I’ve seen softer skin!
Protect against the sun
Another HUGE life lesson I wish I had learned sooner – but there’s no time like the present! Finding products that use SPF to protect against the sun as well as regularly using sunblock when outdoors is a pillar to any daily routine.
Countersun‘s line of mineral sunblock has saved my Irish skin on many of occasions. Best yet, they offer their collection as a lotion, mist, or stick! I personally love using the stick for travel and applying on my busy three year old. No more greasy mess or WWE fights with my son before playtime outside or vacations!
Another great idea is to find makeup that incorporates SPF. It’s the easiest way to protect your skin and keep you looking fabulous. I use Beautycounter’s Dew Skin, which works as an SPF moisturizer and has a little tint to even skin tone. I use it like a foundation then apply my Flawless in Five collection to finish out my look (and yes, I can actually get my whole makeup routine done in about 5 minutes).
Remove your makeup every night
I know a thing or two about long days – both from teaching all day and that other full-time gig as a mom. There are plenty of nights where all I want to do is a quick rinse in the shower, brush my teeth, and hit my pillow for bed. But there’s a significant reason to make sure to wash your face each night and that’s to cleanse your skin from makeup, clogged pores, pollutants, dirt, and even dead skin. It’s gross, I know, but by getting in this habit you’ll instantly notice a difference in your skin and less breakouts.
Invest in quality.
This last one was a game changer for me – and not just with skincare, but in all aspects of my life. I no longer question why something is so expensive but rather question why certain products are so cheap. I know drugstore prices are hard to beat, but there’s a reason their makeup is at that price point. Cheap and artificial ingredients will always keep prices low – from what’s in fast food to what you put on your skin.
The moment I made the mindset switch I found myself really investing in things that were high quality and would last me.
Why I made the clean swap to Beautycounter.
The mission behind Beautycounter is more than just selling you lipstick and it’s unlike anything out there. The brand behind these products is a movement of which is centered around providing safer beauty products for everyone and revolutionizing the beauty industry in the process. Beautycounter is a company that’s dedicated to educating the public on the harmful ingredients found in common skincare and makeup products and advocating on behalf of everyone for safer beauty. The hope is that this mission will send a clear message and force other beauty brands to get on board to providing safer products to their customers.
I made the swap because not only do I believe and support that mission, but Beautycounter‘s products stand on their own in terms of the quality of ingredients and proven results.
Taking care of our skin is oftentimes one of the biggest lifestyle habits we look over, but there are so many ways we can all take that initial step towards living healtheir and cleaner. Our skin filters so many pollutants in the air as well as the products we apply daily, so it’s only fair we begin to really consider how well we take care of it.
